Greek I

Introductory (Koine) Greek

This course is designed to serve as an introduction to the language of the New Testament and the 1st century Roman Empire.  Intended for older students and adults, this course teaches the skills and knowledge necessary to be able to read the New Testament in its original language.

In this first year of Greek study, students will learn the alphabet, begin the process of building a strong vocabulary, and learn the basics of the verbal and noun systems of the language.  In addition, students will be introduced to specific principles of translation, especially as it relates to the unique challenges presented in the language of the New Testament.  The readings (texts) chosen for this course will be taken primarily from the New Testament.

Introductory Greek will meet one evening per week, with weekly homework assignments designed to give the students the practice that the study of any language requires.
